Picnic and Water sports by Lake Gregory
At the centre of town lies Lake Gregory, a mini reservoir built by, and named after Sir William Gregory in 1873, during his tenure as Governor of Ceylon. Lake Gregory, or Gregory’s Lake, was originally made for the purpose of providing electricity to the town. Today, it is often the main attraction in Nuwara Eliya for its combination of recreational activities, local entertainment, picturesque views and a relaxed, family friendly atmosphere. The most popular activities include an array of water sports on the lake, from speed boat rides, jet skiing, paddle boating, kayaking and motorboat rides. Life jackets are provided, and all safety precautions adhered to. If water sports are not of interest to you, hop aboard a helicopter for a thrilling 15-minute aerial tour of Nuwara Eliya town. The aviation team are not available every day, so please check with a butler beforehand if this is what you plan to visit for.
The area encircling the lake is also an attraction in itself – beautifully maintained lawns, with neatly trimmed hedges and blooming flowers, is where families and friends gather on the weekends. In the late afternoons, you will see both locals and foreign tourists laying on the grass with a picnic basket in hand, children playing games and flying kites, whilst joggers make their way along the walking path in the cool hill country climate. Bicycles are available for rent and pony and horse rides are always a favourite amongst children. There are also many vendors stationed nearby selling refreshments and snacks, toys, strawberries, and other local delicacies. A row of eateries serves delicious Sri Lankan cuisine including Rice & Curry and Kothu Roti. Lake Gregory makes for a fun day out in Nuwara Eliya, especially if you are travelling with kids. If you would like us to prepare a picnic for you to enjoy on the lawn, overlooking Gergory’s Lake, please inform a butler a couple of hours in advance.
