As part of our environmental initiatives, the team at Nine Skies planted 200 Kumbuk trees along a section of the Badullu Oya riverbank, in a project to mitigate soil erosion. A tree native to India and Sri Lanka, Kumbuk plays an important role in our ecosystem by affording protection and purification of riverbanks and streams through their root systems. The team carries our regular inspections of these trees to ensure healthy growth.
The team at Fort Bazaar hosts annual blood donation drives in honour of World Blood Donor Day each year, for our community in the south. We have had a total of 116 willing donors including members from the Fort Bazaar team. The project was handled by a team of 11 Public Health Inspectors, nurses, and doctors from the Karapitiya Hospital, generating 89 pints of blood in 2023/2024.
Our commitment to sustainability extends far beyond our properties. We believe that a clean and healthy environment is essential for the well-being of our communities, which is why we actively engage in various clean-up initiatives. Our teams regularly organise beach clean-ups to protect marine life and keep our stunning coastlines pristine. We also support cultural and religious landmarks by helping to maintain these sacred spaces, and enhance our communities with road clean-ups, fostering a sense of care and responsibility. At the iconic Nine Arches Bridge, we conduct periodic clean-ups along around the train station and along the railway line, to help preserve its beauty and historical charm.
The Lunuganga team organised a special lunch for the DP Wijesinghe Children’s Orphanage, and engaged in a cleaning program dedicated to revitalising and maintaining the children’s playground and garden area.
Over the course of 4 days the Kumu Beach team improved the Anula Wijerama Children Development Centre in Balapitiya by creating an outdoor study area, repairing garden lighting, revitalizing the volleyball court, and renovating the shower area. The project also included team-building activities and ended with a garden dinner and gift-giving, reflecting the team’s commitment to the children's well-being. In 2024, the Kumu Beach team organized a special dinner for 30 children at the center. Through the Anula Wijerama Initiative in partnership with Mathilda Karlsson, school supplies, a television, and a financial contribution were also provided to support the orphanage.
Wallawwa partnered with CleanTech to host an engaging workshop on environmental stewardship aimed at inspiring young minds to embrace responsibility for a greener future. The interactive workshop was held for 650 students of Rahula College and covered topics including practical strategies for reducing environmental impact and exploring ways to incorporate eco-friendly habits into daily life. The collaboration was not just a learning experience but a call to action on sustainable practices, waste management, and the importance of protecting natural resources. Cleantech is an ISO certified sustainability arm of the Abans Group of companies. It is the only Sri Lankan company who provide integrated waste management solutions and consultancy for waste management requirements. Its Circular Economy Department is responsible for the recycling of E-Waste, PET and Plastic, Paper, Metal, Styrofoam, and Batteries.
The Teardrop CARE Foundation raised Rs. 69,080 through recent donations from our guests to carry out urgent repair work, painting, and infrastructure upgrades of the Goatfell Primary School. The recent upgrade was carried out by 10 members of the Goatfell team who volunteered a total 129 hours to complete the project. The recent upgrade has provided the school’s 54 students with improved classrooms, modern amenities including the donation of a new printer, and essential learning materials. This initiative not only addresses the immediate needs of the students but also fosters a nurturing environment where they can thrive and reach their potential.
The Fort Bazaar team planted 10 mara trees, commonly known as the ‘rain tree’, as part of our efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change. Tree planting is a critical component of our sustainability efforts, as it addresses a range of environmental challenges while promoting long-term ecological health. Beyond environmental benefits, trees contribute to water conservation by reducing surface runoff and improving groundwater recharge. In urban areas like the Galle Fort, they will provide shade in years to come, improving the quality of life in the Fort, both for residents and visitors.
The Fort Bazaar team recently carried out an extensive cleanup project at the Sambodhi Home for the Disabled, along with a time of community engagement and a meal for the residents of the home. Founded in 1964, the Sambodhi Home for the Disabled cares for 47 individuals ranging in ages from 7 to 75 near Galle. The home largely depends on the generosity of the local and visiting community.
Wallawwa hosted 24 advanced-level students from Kotugoda Rahula College for a tour and career discussion on opportunities in hospitality. The visit aimed to provide students with an overview of the industry and introduce them to various career paths within hospitality. During their time at the property, the students met with department heads across different functions, gaining valuable first-hand insights into the diverse roles that a career in hospitality can offer.
In March 2024, the Teardrop Care Foundation raised Rs. 59,000 in funds to purchase 17 pairs of shoes for students of Opatha Primary School. An initiative that the team at Wallawwa facilitated.
