Experiences
The Wallawwa’s quiet rural location is a sublime place to rest and recuperate for a few nights before or after your flight. It’s tempting to stay put, straying no further than the hotel’s gorgeous garden and pool, or perhaps indulging in a Sri Lankan cookery demonstration with our chefs, yet the diverse range of places to visit, and things to do in Negombo could keep you busy for days.
Negombo is a good starting point, and the town’s Catholic churches, Dutch fort and lively fish markets can be surveyed on foot with a local guide, while the town’s vast mangrove-fringed lagoon and network of old Dutch canals can be explored by boat or aboard a kayak.
Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, is a 30-40-minute drive away, and offers high-end shopping, dining and contemporary art galleries. One of the most enjoyable ways to discover this city is on foot, touring the fort area and bustling Pettah bazaar district with a knowledgeable guide.
Other sights from The Wallawwa include a novel visit to a world-renowned cigar factory, a visit to an ancient Buddhist temple, and day trips to a tea factory and an elephant sanctuary.
