A destination in itself, Lunaganga sits on the shore of Dedduwa Lake in Bentota

Lunuganga is a few minutes inland from the beach town of Bentota, home to wonderful beaches and water sports. Hidden within a 15-acre garden, the setting is serene and totally private. Exquisite gardens are filled with sculptures, frangipani trees, lush courtyards, lily ponds, romantic pavilions and inspirational views over the lake and surrounding jungle. The coastal towns of Balapitiya - famous for its serene boat rides on the Madu river - and Ambalangoda - significant for being the heart and soul of Sri Lankan art and culture - are within easy reach.

GETTING TO LUNUGANGA

Lunuganga is about a 1.5-hour drive from the airport or Colombo city. The Colombo-Bentota express train offers a scenic albeit longer coastal transfer or you can fly in via seaplane, landing on Bentota’s lagoon for a much shorter travel time.

Bentota has a good road connection with the rest of the island so getting to the hotel from other cities is fairly easy. From Galle: 1-hour drive, Kandy: 4.5-hour drive.

HISTORY OF LUNUGANGA

Geoffrey Bawa spent over forty years transforming this once abandoned rubber estate into an idyllic, arcadian landscape that it is today – an ode to tropical modernism that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor areas, a trademark of his eclectic signature style.

Whilst the management of the rooms, dining, and overall hotel is by Teardrop Hotels, the estate is overseen by The Lunuganga Trust, formed by Bawa in 1993 with the objective of managing and preserving the estate following his passing.
WEATHER AND SEASONALITY
Located on the west coast of the island, at the mouth of the River Bentota and the Indian Ocean, Bentota is a year round destination with temperatures averaging 30°C.

While the region receives rainfall throughout the year, the months from December to April, and July and August is when the beach is the calmest, allowing visitors to experience the magic of this coastal town.
