The 7 Best Beaches in Sri Lanka

21 Oct 2024
By Teardrop Hotels
Sri Lanka’s coastline is a treasure trove of vibrant beaches and unforgettable experiences. Stretching from Bentota in the south-west to Kalkudah in the east, each coastal town offers something unique and is easily accessible, making it a breeze for couples, families or a group of friends to combine beach stays with spectacular jungle experiences, hill-country wellness walks and historic sites. Here’s our ultimate guide to the best beaches in Sri Lanka.
Bentota

LAGOON SAFARIS & WATER SPORTS

Located on Sri Lanka’s west coast, Bentota is a destination brimming with natural treasures. Lagoon boat rides along the Madu River and water sports along the coast rank among the most popular things to do in Bentota. The river, with its dense mangrove forests and small islands, offers an immersive experience into Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity. You’ll spot colourful birds, water monitors, and even monkeys swinging through the trees on a good day. Once you’ve had your fill of watersports on the beach in Bentota, you might like to check out the area's fascinating art capital Ambalangoda which is home to the crafts of traditional puppetry and mask making. You’re also just a short drive from the iconic Bawa gardens, Lunuganga and Brief Gardens.
Ahangama
YOGA & CHILL
An almost bohemian hideaway, Ahangama is one part party central of the south, and one part surf and yoga paradise. This beach is a quieter spot compared to some of its neighbouring towns, making it ideal for anyone looking for a less crowded surfing experience.

The waves here are gentle enough for beginners, and family-friendly surf schools are available, offering lessons for both kids and adults. Ahangama is famous for its stilt fishermen, a traditional fishing method unique to Sri Lanka. Many hotels in and around Ahangama offer surf and yoga sessions for all levels, giving you the blend of an active and calming beach stay.
Weligama
WHALES & SUNSET CRUISES
Weligama’s long, sandy beach is a family favourite, with shallow waters that are ideal for young children to splash around in. The beach is wide, allowing you to spread out and enjoy a mix of activities, from building sandcastles to trying out boogie boards. Weligama is one of the safest beaches on the southern coast, with gentle waves that suit beginner surfers. Just a short drive from Weligama is Mirissa, one of the best locations in the world for whale watching. You can take an early morning boat trip to spot majestic Blue Whales, Sperm Whales, and Dolphins. Alternatively, a sunset cruise gives you a more relaxed time on the water.
Hiriketiya
SURFING & PIZZA
A crescent-shaped bay with calm, turquoise waters. Its waves are gentle enough for easy swimming, surfing and stand-up paddleboarding. Equipment rentals are easily available, and even young children can give surfing a try with some guidance. Relax on a beach blanket on the soft sand with a book, and duck into any one of the quaint cafes and small restaurants nearby serving up fresh seafood and snacks.
Arugam Bay
WAVES & WILDLIFE
Laid-back Arugam Bay is located on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka, is often hailed as the island’s best beach for surfing. Famous for its world-class waves and bohemian vibe, it’s a top destination for surfers, especially during the season from May to September. The vast bay is framed by golden sands, clear turquoise waters, and lush greenery and lagoons that are frequented by wild elephants, who often wander through from nearby wildlife-rich Kumana National Park, making it ideal for nature lovers who want to explore beyond the shore.
Kalkudah
TURQUOISE OCEANS & SUNRISE SWIMS
Located on the east coast, just two hours from Trincomalee and a short walk from neighboring Passikudah, Kalkudah is a remote and untouched beach, the kind of setting that tempts you to chuck that return ticket and extend your time beneath the palm trees. The east coast is where you'll witness the finest sunrises on the island, and another inventive for waking early is the chance to wade chest deep into calm waters that are warm enough to swim in even at the break of dawn. Though shade is scarce, the beach here is a flat and tranquil oasis. This part of the island’ coast is among the finest for sailing and snorkeling adventures in nearby Passikudah.
Trincomalee
SNORKELING & DIVING
Trincomalee, located on the northeastern coast of Sri Lanka, is home to pristine beaches like Nilaveli and Uppuveli which are renowned for white sands and calm, turquoise waters, beneath which lie some of the best coral reefs in the country. The marine life here is the best in the island and a day’s trip will take you to Pigeon Island where you can swim with reef sharks, and snorkel for hours in an unforgettable underwater experience. Trincomalee’s unique charm also lies in its stunning colonial forts, and ancient temples like the famous Koneswaram Temple perched on a cliff with jaw dropping views of the Indian Ocean.
