Surfing is a major part of the island’s coastal culture.
Sri Lanka has been a major surf destination since the 1970s, with the main surf spots located in the South Coast (from December to March), and the East Coast (from July to October).
From Hikkaduwa, all the way up to Tangalle, there are reef-break points and dive spots at almost every beach, perfect for surfing, especially for beginners. The more advanced-level waves are further back, with offshore winds making clean waves and consistent swells during peak season.
The surf lesson begins with half an hour of theory and demonstration of the basic moves and techniques. This is then followed by a 1-hour practical lesson in the sea with the instructor to help get you up on the waves. Lessons are suitable for everyone; children, beginners or advanced surfers, and the session can be customized according to your skill level.
This experience is available from Fort Bazaar & Kumu Beach.
