Teardrop Hotel’s lead Naturalist, Dinesh de Silva, not only plays a key role in guiding our guests along fascinating trails in the hills but also helps educate both guests and our own team about the environment and ecosystems of the region. His goal is to create greater awareness around the conservation and care that our island home requires. We had the good fortune of hiking with him in the tea country surrounding Camellia Hills, where he shared his top tips for exploring the hills — along with some fascinating insights from his time in the area. Read on for the full interview:

What are your best tips for walking in Sri Lanka’s tea country?

Tell us about your favourite viewpoint in Sri Lanka.

Ella Rock viewpoint, because it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. A close second, would be the Ravana waterfall viewpoint.

What are the most interesting birds you’ve spotted in and around Teardrop’s tea bungalows?

What is your favourite Teardrop tea bungalow for enjoying wildlife and why?

Nine Skies is ideal for birdwatching, thanks to its location and the variety of bird species that can be spotted there. Camellia Hills is another favourite – particularly for night walks, which offer the opportunity to observe nocturnal wildlife like the Sri Lankan leopard, Sambar deer, Brown Fish Owl, and fireflies.

What advice do you have for anyone trying The Pekoe Trail for the first time?

In addition to the general hiking advice above, keep these tips in mind:

What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had in the wild?

At Camellia Hills, I once saw two leopards – a mating pair – during a night walk. But my most unforgettable experience was in Yala National Park, where I saw seven leopards during a single game drive. The first sighting included three leopard cubs with their mother, and the second featured two cubs with their mother. It was truly magical.
