    Whale Watching by Air

Climb aboard a 3-seater plane and fly over the beautiful coast of southern Sri Lanka in search of magnificent whales in this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Surrounding the island lies an ocean blessed with an abundance of large sea mammals such as Blue whales, Sperm whales, and Bryde’s whales, as well as large pods of playful Spinner and Bottlenose dolphins, and seeing them from above is an encounter to remember. Aerial whale watching ensures you have the best views while causing no disturbance to the whales below. Observing these gentle giants from a birds-eye view also gives you a better perspective of their sheer size and length, rather than watching them from a boat or catamaran. It also helps avoid seasickness, if you are prone to it. F-Airways are the only authorised operators of whale watching by air. A team of professional pilots conduct all flights to give the best flight experience to passengers whilst maintaining the highest of standards and safety levels. Their high-winged Cessna aircrafts offers unobstructed view from the window seats making it a spectacular experience.

The 1-hour flight takes off from Koggala Airport and is a 20-minute drive from the hotel. Upon arriving at the airport, you will be given a safety briefing by the pilot. After take-off, the pilot will head 20 miles south-east over the Indian Ocean, which should take 10-15 minutes, and is one of the best locations to spot whales. Once the pilot has spotted a whale, he will descend the aircraft down to approximately 600 feet and continue circling around so that you can witness these wonderful whales in all their glory and take as many pictures as your heart desires. Once you’ve had plenty of time with the whales, you will also be treated to a breath-taking view of the south coast and its pristine golden sands, palm trees, the famous Dondra Lighthouse, Galle Fort, and even Fort Bazaar (if you manage to spot it). Always remember, sighting whales is a magical yet natural experience, their appearance on the day is not guaranteed! However, on the off chance that there are no whale sightings, you will still have plenty to photograph. Prices include life jackets and refreshments.
