A fascinating tour of three iconic places of worship
The venues include Dhowa Rock Temple and Nazareth Chapel of the Good Shepherd Convent, both of which are in the town of Bandarawela, and St. Benedict’s Monastery in Haputale.
Situated close to a picturesque stream, the Dhowa Rock Temple, also known as Dhowa Rajamaha Viharaya, is believed to have been the inspiration of King Walagamba in the first century BC when he took refuge from Indian invaders.
The Nazareth Chapel is the work of renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. The overall effect is one of focused calm and sanctity, achieved through manipulation of space, juxtaposition of simple materials, and the careful control of light and shade.
St. Benedicts Monastery, is a stately stone mansion built in 1931 by Sir Thomas Villiers, an English planter. The mansion was purchased by Sylvestro Benedictine monks in 1961 to serve as their novitiate, where those who seek to enter the monastic life are trained.
