4. Trek Stage 16 or 17 of The Pekoe Trail
Two scenic and culturally rich sections of the Pekoe Trail, Stages 16 and 17 offer a blend of history, nature, and local charm. Stage 16 begins at the Ella Railway Station before veering into the lush Ella Forest Reserve. The trail leads to the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, a colonial-era engineering marvel often dubbed the “bridge in the sky.” From here, it climbs toward the Newburgh Tea Factory, then winds past tea estates, chena cultivations, and village homes, offering glimpses into rural life. The route continues to the historic Demodara Station, home to the legendary Demodara Loop, where the railway line ingeniously spirals beneath itself. Stage 17 begins at Demodara Station, leading walkers along the quiet Demodara–Spring Valley Road. Highlights include the crossing of the Badulla Bridge, stretches through sweeping tea fields, a charming footbridge over a creek, and views of the colonial-era Demodara Tea Estate.
